Smart window cleanup
a. It tightly repositions the icons. It builds up the window an icon
at a time. If there is enough space to fit an icon it will fit it
there. So no space is wasted. Also the window is just the right size
for its icons.
b. You can specify the vertical and horizontal spacing for the icons.
Icons will never be placed less than these distances apart.
c. You can specify that windows will always be sufficiently wide for
you to read the windows title. How many times have you had a screen
full of windows where you don't know where each window comes from
as the titles are not visible?
d. The programme takes into account the length of each icons name so
that names don't overlap. This also happens if you use variable
width fonts for icon names.
e. If the window fills the whole screen, further icons are placed
off the screen vertically downwards. This is to minimize the
scrolling you have to do to access all your icons. The screen has
more width than height! The programme handles custom sized screens.
f. If a directory has no icon, the icons inside are still repositioned
relative to an imaginary window. On version 2.0 and higher the
imaginary window is the window of the appropriate default icon.
On earlier versions, the windows origin is taken as (0,0).
What all this means is that when you create an icon for the directory
the icons inside will already be nicely positioned.
g. The programme will cope with all window and icon fonts including
variable width ones.
h. Icons with identical pictures will generally be grouped together
and as you move away from the top left corner the icons with a
particular picture are generally arranged alphabetically.
i. Directory icons and big icons go to the top left of windows which
is the most visible place to be. Icons are placed in decreasing
order of size. There is a bias towards directory icons of an
extra 4000 pixels of area.
j. If many icons have the same picture, they will usually occur
together in "flocks" especially off screen. Within a flock the
icons will usually be arranged alphabetically.
